If you’re a fan of both hyper-realistic street racing and the genre-defining Sword Art Online anime franchise, you likely lost your mind when the Racing Master x Sword Art Online crossover dropped earlier this month. I’ve been playing Racing Master for almost two years, and I’ve never seen the community this hyped for a limited-time event — and for good reason. The crossover brings iconic SAO characters, lore, and aesthetics straight to the game’s racing tracks, without ruining the core racing gameplay that long-time fans love. I’ve put in 14 hours playing through every part of the event so far, and I’m breaking down everything you need to know to unlock all rewards, avoid common mistakes, and get the most out of this collab before it’s gone.
What’s Included in the Racing Master x Sword Art Online Crossover Event?
First off, let’s cover exactly what you can access during the crossover window, which runs for 6 weeks total. The biggest draw for most fans is the fully realized Aincrad street circuit, a 3.2km track that wraps around a digital recreation of SAO’s first floor castle. The track has sharp hairpin turns, long straightaways perfect for nitro bursts, and small Easter eggs hidden around every corner, from glowing teleport gates to NPCs in SAO character outfits standing along the barriers. You don’t have to unlock the track either — it’s available to all players for free as soon as you log in during the event period.
You also get access to a full roster of SAO-themed customization items for both your driver profile and your cars. The most sought-after items are the Kirito and Asuna driver skins, which come with custom voice lines from the original anime voice actors for in-race quips. There’s also the exclusive Elucidator car decal set, which lets you wrap any of your cars to look like Kirito’s iconic sword from the first season of SAO. The devs are also running weekly community contests for the duration of the collab, where you can submit clips of your best races on the Aincrad circuit to win physical SAO merch and in-game currency. I submitted a clip of me passing the boss and 3 other players in the final 200m last week, and I’m still waiting to hear if I won — even if I don’t, it’s fun to see all the creative clips other players are sharing.
The collab also adds a new limited-time game mode that ties directly to SAO’s core lore, which we’ll cover more in a later section. If you’re a long-time SAO fan, you’ll love the little details the devs added to the mode that tie directly to the anime, and it fits perfectly with the Racing Master x Sword Art Online collab’s overall vibe.
How to Unlock All SAO Crossover Rewards Fast
You don’t have to spend any real money to unlock 90% of the crossover content, but you do have to be smart about how you grind event points if you want to get everything before the event ends. I wasted the first two days of the event running standard races that gave barely any points, so I’ve worked out the most efficient grind path that takes less than 30 minutes a day to hit all your point goals.
Your daily priority list should look like this, no exceptions:
Don’t waste event tokens on random loot crates until you’ve picked up all the limited-time permanent items first. The loot crates only have temporary items like 3-day nitro boosts and profile banners, while the permanent skins, decals, and track customization items are only available for direct purchase with event tokens for the duration of the collab. Save 1500 tokens first for the limited-edition Aincrad car wrap — it’s only available during the crossover, and it’s the most popular customization item from the event so far. I’ve seen dozens of players say they regret wasting tokens on crates early on and now don’t have enough to get the wrap before the event ends.
Exclusive SAO Crossover Game Mode Changes You Need to Know
The new “Floor Boss Race” game mode is the most unique part of the crossover, and it’s nothing like the standard Racing Master modes you’re used to. In this mode, 8 players race against each other and an AI-controlled boss character modeled after Illfang the Kobold Lord, the first floor boss from SAO season 1. The boss doesn’t follow the same race rules as players — it can use SAO-style skills to slow down or disable players that get too close to it.
The most important mechanic to watch out for is the boss’s paralysis skill. The boss’s "Paralysis" skill will disable your nitro for 3 seconds if you’re within 10 meters of it when it triggers, so you need to hang back a little until you hit the final 500m straightaway of the track. I made the mistake of staying right behind the boss for most of my first few runs, and I kept getting my nitro disabled right when I needed to pass both the boss and other players to take first place. It’s way better to stay in 3rd or 4th place for the first two laps, save all your nitro, and burst past everyone and the boss in the final stretch.
You also get bonus points for dealing “damage” to the boss during the race, which you do by drifting close to it or using nitro to bump into its sides. You don’t have to finish first to get maximum points from this mode — if you deal enough damage and finish in the top 5, you’ll still get almost the same amount of points as the first-place finisher. That means you don’t have to risk crashing trying to pass everyone early on; just focus on dealing damage and finishing clean.
Is the SAO Crossover Pay-to-Win?
This is the question I’ve seen asked most in the Racing Master Discord and Reddit threads over the past two weeks, and I’m happy to say the answer is no. All of the core crossover content — the Aincrad track, the Floor Boss Race mode, the full story quest line, and almost all of the customization items — are 100% free to unlock for all players, no paid pass required. There’s no hidden paywall blocking you from enjoying every part of the Racing Master x Sword Art Online crossover, which is a nice change from a lot of mobile game collabs these days.
The only paid content for the crossover is a $19.99 premium pack that includes a special Kirito-themed sports car, extra profile banners, and a voice pack that lets you have Kirito narrate your races. All paid crossover items are purely cosmetic and do not give any performance advantage over free cars or items. The Kirito car has exactly the same speed, acceleration, and handling stats as the free SSR sports car you can unlock by finishing the 7-part story quest line. The only difference is the paint job and the custom engine sound effect that sounds like a sword being drawn.
I don’t think the premium pack is worth it unless you’re a diehard SAO fan who wants every single crossover item. I bought it myself because I’ve been a SAO fan since it first came out, but I haven’t noticed any advantage when I use the Kirito car versus the free SSR car I unlocked from the story. You can get every single item that affects gameplay without spending a cent, which is a huge win for players who don’t want to pay for limited-time event content.
The Racing Master x Sword Art Online crossover is easily the best limited-time event Racing Master has run in the past year, and it’s clear the devs put a lot of care into making it feel true to both franchises. You don’t have to grind 8 hours a day to get all the good rewards, and you don’t have to spend any money to access all the core content. If you haven’t jumped into the event yet, you still have a few weeks left to get all the permanent skins and decals before they’re gone for good. I’m still grinding to get the last few pieces of the Elucidator decal set, so if you see me on the Aincrad circuit, feel free to say hi — just don’t cut me off in the hairpin turns.
